Co-Axial (Co-Ax) Filler Needles

Problems addressed: Oxygen-sensitive products, dispenses requiring atomization of product, dispenses requiring suck back for cosmetic purposes.
Contraindications: N/A, except for lack of necessity
Description: Co-axial (co-ax) needles surround the fluid column sent forth from the filler needle with a column of inert gas, usually nitrogen, in order to shield an oxygen-sensitive product from contact with room air. Often, there is another needle that will first purge the container of room air before the dispense takes place, followed by a final needle that fills the headspace on top of the product with more inert gas. The container is then stoppered and capped, devoid of room air, significantly extending the shelf life of the product.

Occasionally, we have designed co-ax needles to fire off a droplet of product from the end of the needle, in order to atomize it or break off a small sphere. The outer "gassing" portion of the co-ax can also be used to create suction, removing all product that falls above a set point, ensuring that all containers are filled to the exact same level, mainly for aesthetic purposes.

The closer (larger) hose barb is for fluid while the further (smaller) hose barb is for the gassing portion of the needle.
Overlook co-ax filler needle

Overlook utilizes silicone o-rings to ensure mounting stability of the fluid portion. O-rings are much easier to clean and sterilize than a threaded design.

Overlook makes single-use co-ax needles as well. Our OneShot™ co-ax needles feature a one-piece design (no cleaning is required) and include all the same options as our other custom needles. Notice the Teflon coating on the fluid portion, to reduce wicking.
